The Tea Market

The Tea Market

German consumers use about 19,000 tonnes of tea per year. The figure seems small and is small compared to the worldwide production figure totalling 5,700,000 tonnes of tea (2017). But the tea consumed in Germany is very high quality.

Around 69 per cent of the tea produced worldwide is consumed in the country where it is grown, the rest is exported. The choicest qualities often land in Germany where they are processed and blended for the German consumer market but in some cases are re-exported. The tea specialities developed by expert tea tasters with their keen sense of trends and innovative products are greatly in demand among connoisseurs all over the world.

So it comes as no surprise that Hamburg, as a “tea capital” and the second-largest seaport in Europe, is the hub of the European tea trade and a world-leading transhipment centre. That is the reason why Meßmer MOMENTUM is located in the Port of Hamburg – a particularly inspiring location for making and creating tea.
